FLASHBACK FRI, I WON U WIN und "I'M SO SMART!"

It's Flashback Friday time! In honor of MOCHA LINDA's sister's birthday today, she's taking a look back at the childhood birthdays.
What were birthdays like when you were growing up? THE EARLIEST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION I REMEMBER WAS MY 4TH...WE HAD TO CANCEL AT THE LAST MINUTE DUE TO CHICKEN POX...SO I ENDED UP EATING THE CAKE MOTHER HAD MADE WITH OUR FAMILY AND LOTS OF ITCHING. "THE OATMEAL BATHS WERE SOOTHING" EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE NO PARTY PRESENTS.
Were they a big deal or understated? UNDERSTATED WAS THE THEME OF OUR PARTIES, SO THERE'S NOT A LOT TO TALK ABOUT ... HOMEMADE CAKES WERE THE NORM, BETTY CROCKER TREATED US NICELY.  WE DID SOMETIMES GET A FEW BALLOONS TIED IN DIFFERENT PLACES, DIDN'T GET ANY HELIUM UNTIL MUCH LATER.
Did you have parties? MAINLY MY 'PARTIES' WERE 'SPEND THE NIGHTS'...MY BIGGEST BEING WHEN I TURNED 13 AND ACTUALLY WAS ABLE TO INVITE ALL MY FAVS OVER FOR SLEEPING BAGS IN THE LIVING ROOM, POPCORN AND ICE CREAM...(and the boys showed up around 11pm, outside the front door...and we GOT to talk to them without my Daddy pitching 'a conniption' as my Mother would say...we DID NOT get to go outside and spend any time with them)...there were NO cell phones to continue the conversations like now...what would we have done had there been cell phones then?
Get to choose what or where the family ate for dinner? TODAY WE HAVE THIS AS A TRADITION IN MY FAMILY BUT WHEN I WAS A CHILD WE didn't go out much, EVER...SO WE ALWAYS ATE AT HOME.  NOW WE DID GET TO CHOOSE THE MENU, WHICH WAS A BIG DEAL FOR ME...LOVED MY MOM'S FRIED CHICKEN AND MY DAD'S GRILLED STEAKS COULDN'T BE BEAT
Are there any particular birthday traditions that you remember?  ALWAYS BEING SUNG TO...NO MATTER WHERE WE WERE...how exciting is that?
Is there any birthday that stands out (good OR bad!), either due to the events surrounding it or due to the particular present(s) you received? HUBS OUTDID HIMSELF WHEN I TURNED 35...DD WAS 2YO AND HE 'AHEAD OF TIME' SCHEDULED A BABYSITTER...HE CAME BACK TO THE HOUSE EARLY FROM WORK AND 'KIDNAPPED' ME.
DRIVING AWAY FROM MY BABY, NOT KNOWING WHERE WE WERE GOING...UNTIL WE TURNED INTO THE AIRPORT.
I GOT 2 HOURS IN THE AIR, FLYING A SINGLE-ENGINE CUB (WITH A PILOT) TO MY RIGHT AND HUBS hanging on for dear life IN THE BACK SEAT.  I WAS GIVEN THE CONTROLS TO TAXI (steering with my feet to the end of the runway)
TAKING OFF IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO EXPERIENCE BECAUSE OF THE POWER YOU HAVE AT YOUR FINGERTIPS...handling THE TAKE OFF using the throttle AND FLYING between 600-800 feet WAS INCREDIBLE.  THE PILOT WAS A FUN GUY AND WATCHED FOR OTHER PLANES WHILE I CIRCLED ABOVE LAKE LANIER...SEEING THE ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS MANSIONS ON THE LAKE.  I WAS LITERALLY IN HEAVEN!  HUBS GOT IT SOOOOOO RIGHT THAT YEAR.
