FLASHBACK FRIDAY

joining "the Lid" today ;)
come join us...

Did you like to read when you were a child?
some
What were your favorite genres, books or series?
Pippy Longstockings
and Nancy Drew in my child/teen years
The Hidden Staircase (Nancy Drew, Book 2)
Adult reading:  THE THORNBIRDS by Collen McCulloughThe Thornbirds

anything by Ann Rivers Siddons and Francine Rivers

Did you read books because of the author or because of the title/plot?
title/plot

Did you own many books?
not when I was young, but lots now as an adult

Did your school distribute the Scholastic book orders (or some other type)?
definitely...i LOVED getting to order books

Did you visit the library often?
about once a month from what I remember

Was there a summer reading program when you were young, and did you participate?
Yes...I received a few participant certificates and bookmarks

Do you have any particular memories of your school libraries?
It was a happy, peaceful place...and they always decorated for any particular holidays, highlighting the books in the same time frame.
Sorry to say I don't remember my grammar school librarian though...loved learning about the Dewey decimal system as I got older...Product Details
loved working as a library volunteer while dd was in school.
While working @ Emory University, I used to LOVE hanging out in their HUGE library on my lunch hours...the smells and beauty of ALL THOSE BOOKS amazed me.

What were your favorites and least favorites among the classics (the ones high school English teachers assign!)?
The two I remember liking the most:
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (the first novel I ever read TWICE)
Romeo and Juliet (original version) by William Shakespeare *(the danger of hasty action/power of tragic fate)....I found it difficult to understand the Elizabethan language but beautifully deep in human emotion.

hated ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell dealing with corrupting revolution & SKIN OF OUR TEETH by Thornton Wilder  (comedy about history's repeating itself) ...
I had to write term papers on both these novels...which probably DIDN'T help my liking them.

If you didn't like reading, do you like it more today than you did then?
I enjoy it MORE today than in my teens....
it was a HAVE TO then, now it is a WANT TO

THRONE TRIP TUESDAY...

During the last Spring Break I experienced with our church, I caught a moment in time that was so precious...that will ALWAYS be so precious.  They were there for each other...to share their friendship and to say good bye to their high school beach trips.  A time in the sand with their Father, at His seashore...I wrote this soon after our trip to gather my thoughts about His presence in all three places at once, the before, the during and the after, from the right-hand seat of God..

HIS Sure Seashore...

Walking his shoreline
Capturing THAT moment--
a BRIEF moment of BEING
enjoying Spring Break, TOGETHER...
180 participants ELSEWHERE.

KNOWING a blessing...
yes, knowing the BLESSING,
SHARING:  one loving one at HIS tide...
His NEVER-SLEEPING tide.

Coming in and going out before MAN'S CREATION...
coming in and going out, HOLDING HANDS in the NOW...
coming in, going out after MANKIND'S CONCLUSION...
His TIDE is like HIM...
NEVER sleeping...NEVER ending
NEVER forgetting HE spoke it into being...
His ABSOLUTE.

GoodNightSleepTightPleasantDreamsSameToYou FLASHBACK

What was bedtime like when you were growing up? 9pm until 16yo
...your parents strict in enforcing bedtimes? yes

Were you a difficult one to get to bed? yes, i was afraid i'd miss something...

Did your parents share stories about getting you to sleep when you were a baby? i always slept w/ my big sister

When did your parents turn bedtime over to you? 16yo...i could stay up until 11 if i wanted...usually I didn't want to

Were there any special rituals/routines a parent did - books, singing a special song, etc.?  Nighty kisses, I would hug them and kiss them goodnight

Nightlights, music, special doll/blanket or other things? nighlights for a while; don't remember when they stopped

Did you have your own bed or did you share with a sibling? shared until she got married when I was 13yo

Did you have nighttime fears and bad dreams? Yep, the Jolly Green Giant was always chasing me and I'd hide many places...I never could figure this one out...I loved the JGGiant.

How did you handle them? Mother would come in an calm me if she heard me crying...

Did you ever walk or talk in your sleep? yep, quite often.  I'd take my pillow and go into the bathroom and put the seat down on the toilet...she often found me sitting there saying something, but my Mother never knew what I was saying...she'd walk me back to bed.  I never remembered it the next mornings...guess I was physically running from the Giant again, hahahah.

Feel free to also share any routines you have done with your kids.

WOULD YOU BE AKS-APPROVED?

Oftentimes I see people with dogs and they DO favor.
It's been several years since I had a puppy; but I'm contemplating getting one now that DD is off to college.

As I think back on my little "Murphy"...my peek-a-poo, more peek than poo...he loved sitting in my lap. He'd look up with his happy 'egyptian' eyes (like Cleopatra, with the black eyeliner on top and bottom) and savor any attention. He never lost his puppy fur, he remained wonderfully silken all throughout his 16 years.
Do you favor your doggie in any way?

Have you ever wondered what doggie you'd be...if you were a dog?

Take the following and let me know what you found out you would have been as a PUP! Here's what I would have been, well, kinda:

PROJECT 365...kinda, week 37

A FEW PICS (click each pic to see a larger view) FROM THIS WEEK AS WE LINK UP WITH SARAH
...WEEK 37 ALREADY...ACTUALLY MOST OF THESE PICS ARE FROM WEEK 36
MY NEW CLASS...THEY'RE WONDERFULLY FULL OF KNOWLEDGE AND LOTS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE SCRIPTURES...
IT WAS SUCH A GOOD TIME GETTING TO VISIT WITH DD IN HER NEW ENVIRONMENT OF COLLEGE...BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS.  CLASSES ARE KEEPING HER BUSY  YET SHE HAS MENTIONED SHE MISSES HOME COOKING...YOU KNOW THAT 'INSTITUTIONAL FOOD' REPETITION DOES GET OLD QUICKLY.

WITH MY BAND/PERFORMANCE BACKGROUND, THIS WAS ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR ME....WE WERE PARKED RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE 'MILLION-DOLLAR BAND'S" PRACTICE FIELD

WE WALKED A LOT...A LOT...DID I SAY, A LOT?  HAHA
HER FIRST GAMEDAY WAS FULL OF TAILGATING, EATING AND SHOWING US WHICH BUILDINGS HELD HER CLASSES...AND THE BEST PART OF THE TRIP WAS CATCHING UP WITH OTHER FRIENDS WHO ARE ALSO AT THE SAME COLLEGE

THANKFUL THURSDAY...pouring our oil

Resting on His Word...immersing myself ... gleaning what I'm missing on my own...wrapping up in Him (instead of what's written on the dry-erase board  TO DO list.  Some of those items might just have to change.)
Join me...intentionally read and listen for His perspective about this day...the only day I can influence...yesterday is gone--tomorrow may not come for me.  Click on the link and read with me...Mr. Chamber's guidance from Jesus's teachings...MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST...

Couldn't you just hear Mr. Chamber's Scottish brogue ...spoken with rare insight and great expression. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HIS REMINDING US TO BE 'ANTI-SELF'?

(ANTI-self...selfless, thinking of others first...Wow, How does that go over with today's world?  TV commercials tell me to get the latest computer, taste greatness of the newest lite beer, immerse myself in the hookups and heartbreaks of people baring their relationships on 'shock' TV, like 'Jerry Bring-her" to the stage.)  Who really has time for 'being still' these days?  It is a choice...an action.

What did He say to you as you read the second paragraph?  The picture of Mary pouring her MOST-precious onto the feet of God's Servant, pouring it all out in celebration of His sacrifice.

Measuring that up against my day's plans...grabbing a scoop of life to put memories into my bowl...will they be self-serving or self-giving?  Jesus was trying to get the people to 'be still' and listen to what He was saying...He was about 'Saving' them from the world...hhhhmmm, that still applies today.

(photo: Dwelling in the Word)

What oil do I have to pour out for Him today:...could it be:
  • smiles for the check-out cashier who looks as if she hasn't smiled in a month?
  • a hug for the widow who lives next door that I have talked with recently?
  • or my 'pouring my heart' out to Jesus with my own concern, 'bridled excitement' and emptiness I'm feeling with daughter being so far away in a new college...my gift of 'presence' with the Lord is what Jesus wants FIRST.
Are you pouring yet?  What are you THANKFUL for pouring for Jesus?
