WHAT A JOURNEY

Our Lord has blessed us with a miracle, named Katie...

she's my nephew's baby, and she holds a special place in my heart
Be careful, she will capture your heart, too
She'll be the Heart Association's poster child next February

Yes, she is our crying, walking, talking, singing, teasing, laughing miracle.
If you've not heard her story, watch the below...

WE LOVE YOU, KATIE!

and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

UNCLE RC TRIBUTE

With sadness but lots of love
A tribute/remembrance of Uncle RC...
died December 13, 2009...

“A smile is worth a million intentions”.

I pondered the above quote...deeply it sank into my head while driving home from my aunt and uncle's 60th wedding anniversary last March...

Previously that afternoon probably 20 or more strangers were greeting the family...several people I had known as a child but didn’t recognize their faces due to time and gravity. The one thing remaining...their smiles….I recognized their smiles in their eyes.

Now 80-something...His eyes were bright yet vacant…his eyes were not the same. What remained from my childhood years, though, was his smile. God gave him the strength that day to be with their visitors while concentrating on their faces, trying to pull up any recognition.

He......loved children

...would take us outside to ride motorcycles

...played with the dogs while teaching us to skip rocks over the lake.

...built a get-away cabin in the woods for hunting, fishing and cooking outdoors

... loved his dogs, Yssup (a larger boxer who could eat you--but he was very gentle

...enjoyed his hand-cleared property--pasture, lake...he loved to walk the perimeter.

...refurbished musical instruments--I still play the flute he refinished for me.

...played bluegrass on his guitar, banjo and mandolin in his basement.

...loved going to Waffle House, having coffee with his old “Southern Bell” buddies.

My uncle and my daddy had the same smile…I could see my Daddy each time my uncle smiled...I could hear his laugh, too, and I would get to enjoy a little of Daddy through my uncle. I believe...he is gone from us, but is present with the Lord, and my Daddy.

I pray he is enjoying 'catching up' with my Daddy...and with RC's son, Charlie, who died in 1990...maybe they both were waiting for Uncle RC to join them in the place Christ has been preparing for us!

"I love you and will miss you, R.C. Hug my Daddy for me! It gives me peace knowing you are already together. Save me a seat at the Lord's banquet table.

"So please let your heart be joyful
and let your spirit sing
for I'm spending Christmas in heaven
and I'm walking with the king."

TIP-TOE'ING THROUGH THE SESAME SEEDS...

*please bear with me...this is a little long, but has a good lesson at the end :)...

DD had come home from school today and was in the process of dressing for her "end-of-semester, in-front-of-the-multi-school professors' internship presentation" where she will verbalize her semester accomplishments/activities.

While DD was ready'ing herself, 'Derbs' came over with, of all things...thank you, Jesus,... BUCKEYES...as part of her spreading Christmas cheer! PICT0912

(The above picture is from a musical they were in last year)

Her buckeyes were wonderfully peanutty goodness surrounded in milk chocolate...(Lids, I feel your pain...I want MORE!)

Having nibbled on my ONE buckeye wanting to say "give me that entire bag did I mention I NEEDED more? But obediently I turned away from the plastic bag Derbs was holding, sweetly tempting me with the richly, calorie-blessed balls of pleasure. Yes, I forced myself to turn away and return to my dryer of warm clothes calling to be put into each closet.

This one chore sits now among others on my very-full Christmas list:

  • dish putting-away & dirty dishes going in dishwasher
  • changing bed sheets
  • finalizing photo picture-card order
  • tree decorating
  • gift wrapping
  • Disciple3 lesson class-plan tweaking
  • gift shopping (before 12/18 parties)

After completing one chore, the others were like little sugar plums dancing across my mind...and while reaching into the pantry to throw together a quick-salad lunch...IT HAPPENED...

A BRAIN OVER-RUN ... one over-run with holiday plans

My little synapses were working too hard, I guess...SOMETHING occurring in the depths of my cerebellum unable to endure overload...My hormone-replacement deprived body DEVOURed normal motor skills...they became lackluster.

Rather than placing the handful of small sesame seeds in my lettuce bowl, I DROPPED THE ENTIRE fist full on my kitchen floor.

Can you picture it? Their clicking and bouncing like caffeine-high mexican jumping bean...up and down...sounding like a small waterfall spraying around, across, under, and in every corner of my previously-swept kitchen floor.

Just as they finally settled from their 'happy dance' across my floor, "Derbs" came around the corner (with plastic bag of buckeyes in hand) on her way to her next destination.

{Now, prior to her going upstairs to see DD I had decided I was GOING to tackle her as she was heading out the backdoor and send her on her way without that entire bag ask for another buckeye...} Two wouldn't have been too bad, would it??

"Stop ya'll...just tiptoe around the seeds so they don't get in your car and smushed on my floor!"...no, really so she wouldn't go flying across my floor unexpectedly...then she was out the door and gone...

before I REMEMBERED my wanting ANOTHER buckeye! aaaaarrrrrrggggghhhh! (a quick pirate-moment ensued) :\ sorry....

Oh, well, sometimes I'm protected from myself...even when I don't want to be protected.

When in the midst of getting many things done, what kind of messes have you made...or when did you realize protection even when you caused a mess?

SHOW & TELL FRIDAY..."LESS FRU FRU"

JOINING CINDY @ MY ROMANTIC HOME ...

Thankfully...we're having a 'Charlie Brown' Christmas at our house this year...

One with much less 'fru fru' ...much less out on the tables, counter tops and walls.

Usually I decorate top to bottom...
but this year, I'm participating in a 'pittance' sort of way.

My foyer...usually hosts our hand-painted nativity scene, which is surrounded completely...Completely by:
angel pictures on the wall,
angel peel-and-stick murals on the windows,
angel votives on the staircase,
and even angel stakes in the plants ...
you know, those little metal or plastic decorations you stick in your potted plants.

This year's foyer, however, will be somewhat lonely...
with ONLY an 18" Charlie Brown Christmas tree on the curio cabinet...
the cartoon stick-on Charlie Brown nativity on the front-door sidelite windows...
and a full-sized, decorated Christmas tree in the living room
(couldn't get be without one...it is DD's senior year and all...)
CLICK THE PIC...for a LARGER view...

ALL THE MYRIAD of angels will remain wrapped and tucked away until next year's Holy Season. Their singing will be muffled by all the tissue paper and bubble wrap surrounding them.

The candles will last another year without having to be lit during the celebration and the green, potted plants will let out an 'ignored sigh' as they realize the angels won't be hovering around them for the next three weeks.

Now don't think I'm all depressed and stuff...I'm not.
We'll still be celebrating the Season while eating, singing, wrapping, unwrapping and going to worship.

There's something very FREEING about taking an abbreviated approach this year...
My feet will certainly appreciate not having to traipse up and down both sets of steps while pulling everything from the basement.
And, I could almost hear my 'knees' preparing a serenade... singing their joys of not getting 'pounded' each time I reached the basement concrete floor.

Even my arms and neck are readying to sing in harmony knowing the 'unusual overexertion' won't be happening in 2009.

All this 'true-to-life' relief will be opening my calendar (for those several hours worth of time that would have been decorating)...

... shopping and cooking without feeling it flying by too quickly.

...planning a new 'knitting project' for the shawl ministry.

Yes, Charlie Brown's simplicity ... seeking to be 'less complicated'
Yes, the child-like simplicity...
Yuletide's best decorations: wreaths of smiles, and being wrapped in hugs.

Blessings,

SWELLED HEARTS GAVE THANKS...

(excerpt from THE PUMPKIN, John Greenleaf Whittier)

And the prayer...my mouth too full to express,

Swells my heart...for thy shadow to never be less,

...that the days of thy lot may be lengthened below,

And the fame of thy worth like a pumpkin-vine grow,

May thy life be as sweet...its last sunset sky

Golden-tinted and fair...as thy own Pumpkin pie!

TURKEY-DAY FUN...PARADE BINGO, ANYONE??

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!

While checking around the various websites for Turkey-Day Fun, I ran across the DISNEY FAMILY FUN SITE...
where there are fun Thanksgiving ideas...
They have really cute coloring pages like this...
Or you can click on Parade Bingo ...
print the 6 different sheets (before the Thanksgiving Day parade)...
pass them out to the kids for a game of "Parade Bingo"...
give each player pennies as their place markers...
as they see things on the tv matching their card, they'll place their penny...
Be sure to have a "treat" for your winner(s)!

ENJOY YOUR TIME WITH FAMILY, FRIENDS AND GOD'S BOUNTY!

PRAYERS YOU ARE SAFE, HEALTHY AND COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGS WHILE GIVING THANKS!

RANDOM DOZEN #13...THANKS

Joining Liddie @ 2nd Cup for this week's EARLY Random Dozen!
1. Are you sticking to traditional Thanksgiving foods this year, or are you being culinarily adventurous?
TRADITIONAL (BRINING MY BIRD, AS USUAL)

2. Tell me something concrete that you're thankful for. (Something you can literally touch, see, etc., not a concept like "hope.")
THANKFUL FOR 10 YEARS COLON-CANCER FREE!

3. You knew the flip side was coming: Share about something intangible that you're thankful for.
MY FRENCH-PRESS COFFEE POT

4. Share one vivid Thanksgiving memory. It doesn't have to be deep or meaningful, just something that remains etched in your memory.
HELPING MY MOM MIX THE SOUTHERN DRESSING WITH MY HANDS IN THE LARGEST BOWL (THE TUPPERWARE CAKE CARRIER)...THE GOOEY, WETNESS OF THE DRESSING WHILE SQUISHING IN EACH EGG AS THEY WERE ADDED BETWEEN MY VERY-CLEAN FINGERS STILL REMINDS ME OF ALL THE SOUTHERN TRADITIONS FROM MY MOTHER AND GRANNY.

5. What is one thing that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt is going to happen this Thanksgiving because it always does, year after year?
MY DOUBLE SINK FULL OF DISHES AND EVERYONE THAT SHOULD BE HELPING CLEAN UP WILL BE FALLING ASLEEP ON THE COUCH FROM CARB 'OVERLOAD'

6. Do your pets get any left-overs?
WHEN MURPHY, MY PEEK-A-POO, WAS STILL IN THE WORLD HE'D NIBBLE ANY LEFTOVER APPLE CORES... WHILE I HELD IT FOR HIM...(THIS TRADITION STARTED WHEN I WAS PREGNANT...I CRAVED APPLES, AND AFTER I FINISHED EACH ONE, HE WOULD SIT IN MY LAP AND NIBBLE THE APPLE CORE WITH HIS FRONT TEETH AS I ROTATED IT FOR HIM)...I EVEN HAVE VIDEO OF HIS ENTERTAINING US WITH HIS SCARFING DOWN THE APPLE EDGES...I SURELY MISS HAVING THAT LITTLE BUNDLE IN MY LAP...

7. Does your family pray before the big meal? If so, do you join hands while seated, stand, repeat a formal prayer or offer a spontaneous prayer? Who does the praying?
WE DO PRAY BUT WE TYPICALLY DON'T JOIN HANDS, UNLESS WE HAVE FRIENDS VISITING, THEN WE ENJOY JOINING HANDS WITH THEM

8. Will you be watching football in the afternoon? If not, what will you be doing?
ARE THERE PEOPLE WHO DON'T WATCH FOOTBALL IN THE AFTERNOON??

9. There are two distinct camps of people on this issue: How do you feel about oysters in the dressing/stuffing?
FIRST OFF, MY FAMILY DOESN'T 'STUFF'...WE MAKE PANS OF DRESSING THAT ARE MOIST INSIDE BUT CRUNCHY ON TOP AND AROUND THE EDGES...AND IN OUR FAMILY NONE OF THOSE PANS EVER INCLUDES OYSTERS...WE HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO PUT CHICKEN PIECES IN OUR DRESSING AS IT COOKS. THE ONLY THING INSIDE MY BRINED BIRD IS ORANGES, LEMONS AND/OR VIDALIA ONIONS, WHICH GET TOSSED AFTER IT'S DONE COOKING.

10. Do you consider yourself informed about the first Thanksgiving?

YES, BUT I CAN'T DO IT JUSTICE...SO GO HERE: Plimoth Plantation, Plymouth MA

11. Which variety of pie will you be enjoying?
SWEET POTATO W/ WHIPPED CREAM

12. Do you feel for the turkey?? (This is a humorous throw back question related to the 12th question in another Random Dozen!)
NO FEELING FOR THE TURKEY...HE'LL BE BRINED THE NIGHT BEFORE BEFORE GOING INTO THE SMOKER :)

FALL BUSY-NESS...

Even though I'm still enduring this 'head cold' ... it's been busy around here today. We were blessed with such a BEAUTIFUL, sunshiny day. All the color and crispness can't be truly captured in ALL it's glory but maybe a few pictures will give you an idea of our participation in God's world. CLICK EACH PIC to get a LARGER VIEW :D

Banana nut muffins started the day...

Hubby got busy with the blower, came in the house to get water and was 'pitiful' about needing help...

DD helped Chuckles rake and haul leaves to the compost and I mowed...you could almost hear the yard getting happier

I've enjoyed getting my new baby pansies planted in various locations...could not leave out the garage-door planter

The final few cabbages and pansies will be going into the cement urns sitting on the stoop of the front door

100_2128

I swept the backporch and enjoyed visiting with my new birdhouse (from my recent mountain get-away-with-girlfriends trip)

...as well as my planter of perennials (from my recent trip to GrowersOutlet...I love dusty miller, it will get much bigger in the next month...

Praying your entry into Thanksgiving Week was as colorful as ours...we're very thankful for our little piece of His creation. What did you accomplish in His World today?

PHOTOSTORY FRIDAY: IT'S SIMPLY BLOOMIN' AROUND HERE!..

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and Sue
To play PhotoStory Friday, check this.

My ANGEL TRUMPET BUSHES STARTED BLOOMING on November 6 and they're still blooming! We've had a pleasant lead into November and I'm amazed at the pretty blooms still on my bush in the front yard. One of my prayer partners gave me this bush a couple of years ago :D

IN ADDITION TO MY YARD HAVING COLOR,
my indoor CHRISTMAS CACTUS IS BLOOMING TOO...
IT WAS JUST LITTLE BUDS 13 DAYS AGO, and today it looks like this...

Go, God!!
It sits on my HUTCH JUST IN MY ENTRY WAY, UNDER THE STAIRCASE, so I'm getting to enjoy it each time I walk through the hallway...
Tonight I may move it to my breakfast room table to enjoy it while in the kitchen.
It is soon to be THE SEASON of HIS Birth and I'm enjoying getting to celebrate the entry into the SEASON with my beautiful cactus...

Acts 14:7 "He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;
he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy."

RANDOM DOZEN #12 & LET's SHARE!

My craft idea is one I made for my prayer group a couple of years ago while learning to crochet...ICICLE ANGELS...they're fun to hang on the tree, hang on a stocking and put on a gift instead of a bow...Thank you Granny Judith, for the free pattern!

Liddie...@ 2nd Cup...has another fun group of questions for her "Random Dozen"...
1. If you could master one sport, what would it be?
gymnastics...was always my passion and had to end due to a neck injury...i still want to be 'flipping'.

2. When you make a major purchase, do you go with your gut instinct, or do you do research to make an informed decision? research, checks, consumer reports, friends' input...best bang for the buck

3. There is an old kids' game: Find out what your movie star name--use your middle name as your first name; use the name of the street you grew up on as your last. What is your movie star name? Carol Valley Stream...sounds like a fish camp, doesn't it??!!

4. Would you rather give up your favorite music or your favorite food? food...got to be able to sing those praises

5. There are two types of banana preferences. One is pristine yellow, almost to the point of being green; the other is spotty and more ripe. Which is your preference?
They're two different beasts per se: for eating and banana pudding: bright yellow; for making banana bread: the darker the better
6. Your favorite tree is?
Mimosa...great to climb, awesome to see with their wispy blossoms...the limbs of these trees seem to want to wrap around you...I so enjoyed climbing them at my Granny's house when I was younger

7. On a scale of 1-10, how tech savvy are you? 8-9...having finished my communications career as a network manager...used to deal with many technical issues...many schools, many hours of root cause analysis and major event investigations and write-ups...it was fun and mind boggling at times, but i really miss THE PEOPLE...

8. Has H1N1 touched your family? nope

9. Are you an analytical person, or do you just accept things the way they are without questioning or scrutinizing? pleez...I married an 'driving analytical', what do you think?

10. Is your personality more like that of a dog, cat, or Koala? what made you choose a koala? I'm probably more like a cat(can be aloof when I need to be goal driven...yet I love a good cuddle) ...even though I like hugging, i wouldn't enjoy eating leaves for sustenance

11. Do you keep in touch with friends you made years ago? yes

12. You are checking out at a grocery store. In the express lane, there are more people than the regular lanes, but of course, their load is less than those in the regular lanes. Which lane do you choose (assuming you qualify for the express lane) and why? When in a hurry I take a glance at every ones' buggies...then choose my best bet. I ALWAYS follow the 15-or less rule...if I have more than 15, I'm in the other line. I've been known to let people in front of me on my more leisurely days of shopping...and I'll talk to the cashier and bagger like the REAL people they are... :)

CHUTNEY-CHICKEN SALAD
Curry powder and sweet-hot mango chutney add exotic touches to classic chicken salad with red grapes. Serve the mixture atop full-flavored salad greens with a side of fresh cherries, or try it as a sandwich filling for croissants or wraps.

In a shallow baking pan spread almonds in a single layer.
Bake in a 350° oven for 5 to 10 minutes or until nuts are a light golden brown, stirring once or twice to prevent overbrowning. Cool slightly.

2. Have you ever had “buyer’s remorse” over anything? MY 1983 FOX-SILVER GREY, USED 280-ZX...I BOUGHT IT ON A WHIM AND REALLY 'MISSED' MY BRAND-NEW BUICK LE SABRE, BEIGE ON BEIGE VELOUR 60/40 FRONT SEAT, LEATHER LANDAU TOP... OVER THE YEARS I CAME TO LIKE MY Z CAR BUT IT NEVER REALLY REPLACED MY LE SABRE
~:-/

3. What is something in your life that you are thankful for now that you didn't think you would be at the time of the event? PARENTS THAT WERE VERY PARTICULAR AND TIGHT ON RULES...I FELT VERY CONSTRAINED...BUT, LOOKING BACK, THEY WERE VERY PROTECTIVE AND CARING FOR ME

4. Do you watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade every year? If so, do you have a favorite float or
balloon? NOPE, WHEN I WAS A KID I WATCHED IT A LOT BUT AS THE YEARS HAVE PASSED, MY PARADE DAYS ARE OVER BEFORE I REMEMBER THERE'S A PARADE. BACK IN THE DAY, SNOOPY WAS MY FAVORITE WITH KERMIT A VERY CLOSE SECOND!!

5. Share a quote, scripture, poem or lyric which has been an inspiration to you lately.
I LONG TO ACCOMPLISH A GREAT AND
NOBLE TASK, BUT IT IS MY CHIEF DUTY TO ACCOMPLISH SMALL TASKS AS IF THEY WERE GREAT AND NOBLE. Helen Keller

6. This is meant to be a fun question, and this is a G-rated blog, but please share a “guilty pleasure,” something that you enjoy that’s probably not the most edifying, time-worthy or healthy thing you

I'D USUALLY GO TO THE BASEMENT TO SEE WHAT SEWING PROJECT MY MOM WAS WORKING ON...SHE SEWED FOR MANY PEOPLE...WEDDING GOWNS, DRAPERY, BLOUSES AND EVEN 3-PIECE SUITS.

SPEAKING OF AFTERSCHOOL...I FINALLY got the video to load (from our teen prayer/share the other night)...teens, you just never KNOW what they're gonna do...i think the FUNNIEST part is at the 1min13sec mark when "Mr. O" joins the girls...i want to ask, but i'm LAFF'ing too hard! :D

12. True story: Once, in a job interview, I was asked this question and told there would be no clarifying; I simply had to answer the question: “When you’re fishing, do you feel for the fish?” So what about you? When you're fishing, do you feel for the fish?? MOST DEFINITELY...I USED TO FISH WITH MY FATHER...SOMETIMES WE'D FISH FROM THE SHORE, USING WORMS ON THE HOOK WHILE WE 'JIGGED' THE LINE UP AND DOWN WITH NO FLOAT...TO CATCH 'CRAPPY' ...YOUR POLE WILL JIGGLE WHEN THE FISH BITES AND YOU HAVE TO REACT QUICKLY AND PULL UP TO HAVE THE HOOK GRAB THE FISH. OTHER TIMES WE'D BE OUT IN THE BOAT USING RED AND WHITE FLOATS...WAITING TO SEE THE FLOAT DROP BELOW THE SURFACE, AND KNOWING THERE WAS A BITE AT THE END WITH THE WEIGHT...YOU COULD FEEL THE FISH PULL IF YOU MISSED THE FLOAT. ...I MISS FEELING THE FISH WITH DADDY
