MY RANDOM DOZEN answers...

Joining LIDDIE @ 2ndCup for RANDOM DOZEN...very late, that it...

1. Tell me the absolute best way to watch a movie. (one of the most interesting ways I've ever watched one...with my bestest guy at the FOX THEATRE...a grand ole theatre based Moroccan decor...they play old theatre music on the organ and you sit under the 'indoor' stars while you watch and listen...then a visit to the VARSITY to order ..."2 FOs, and 2 yellow dogs all the way walking (for those not familiar with this wonderful landmark in Atlanta...this is a curb-service tradition across the street from Georgia Tech...and my order means: 2 frosted oranges(orange drink mixed
with soft vanilla ice cream) and 2 hot dogs with mustard and onions TO GO)...and you have to yell it when you say it!

2. Do you ever think about your own funeral? If so, do you have specific ideas about how you would like it to be? Yes, and my accountability sisters have already been informed so they can "oversee" my wishes :)

3. Are you more of a giver or a taker? a giver

4. Vacations: planned activities and schedules, or play it by ear? some of both...i don't like to ALWAYS be on a schedule but do like to have some planned time and special events

5. What is one often overlooked item in your home that needs to be cleaned regularly? The chandelier in my entry way...what a pain!

6. Name a cause that means a lot to you. Early colonoscopy due to family history...SAVED MY
LIFE...so if you have colon cancer history in your family, schedule your exam...it may SAVE YOUR LIFE, TOO! (and with the new tablets you can take the night before the procedure, you don't have the bloating and excessive disruption to your lower anatomy : )...hey, there's only so many ways you can say it.

7. Do you eat a regular old peanut butter jelly sandwich, or do you customize it? And by the way, jelly or no jelly? peanut butter & pineapple slice...it's a yummer...you can toast it and it's even yummier
8. If we were having a conversation in person, how would I know if you were nervous? When I'm nervous I can't sit still...have to be moving something.9. Do you have an elaborate bedtime routine, or just the basics of tooth brushing and jammies? basic...after I wake myself up snoring while having fallen asleep in the recliner, again, and find everyone else has gone to bed, it's 2am and all the infomercials are playing...

10. Have you ever regretted something you wrote on your blog? probably...I do a wonderful job of sticking my foot in my mouth most days, so I'm sure if I went back and reread them I'd find something I'd say "ooops" to then I might have to clarify and so SORRY.

11. Has anyone ever told you that you look like a famous person or celebrity? Did you agree? Our youth kids are always commenting about my reminding them of Paula Deen from Food Network (and
Georgia girl, like me)...I find it interesting that hubby can't stand Paula Deen and leaves the room whenever I'm watching her...wonder if he sees any resemblance?
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I'm sure any resemblance I have may be in my Southern drawl and sometimes loud laugh, and has absolutely nothing to do with the extra 40 pounds I've gained since childbirth. Do you see it?

12. If you were going to dedicate a song to a loved one or friend, what would the song be and to whom would it be dedicated? PRECIOUS MEMORIES (to my Granny and Daddy who are already watching down on me from Heaven)

THOSE ARE MY answers...what about you?

ALL IT TOOK WAS "ASKIN' "...

Joining Mary @ LIttle RED HOUSE...
FALL brings...
HOMECOMING football games and dances...
(dinner/movie with BESTEST girlfriends)

and memories of GRANNY and her knitting needles...
BS&K and I had just finished pounding these bodies into the ground in the dungeon (working out in the basement) and returned upstairs to sit our bones in a chair because we were EXHAUSTED (taking a moment to catch up before getting on to the rest of our day)...
"I've been using these knitting needles with this baby yarn, but they are too
big and the weave is too open...so, I'll have to find my Granny's knitting
needles to use on this baby blanket."

When I made the above statement I KNEW where to go in my house (to get the needles I received when she passed away 15 years ago)...or so I thought. My first problem...I thought.

In these days of surgically-induced menopause my brain has been obliterated from the possibility of remembering things correctly just doesn't keep up anymore. I have to make notes to myself in any split second to remember my next simplest move.

Even though my head was telling me I KNEW where those needles were, I charged upstairs to my 'beautifully engineered craft area' my guest bedroom and began pilfering through the sewing box stowed under the bed... knowing I would be able to grab them and traipse back downstairs to 'begin again' on my baby blanket.

Yet, they had walked away WEREN'T there...where my mushy, unable-to-sometimes-put-together-a-sentence organ taking up room in my skull brain told me they would be waiting.

Working my way through many containers and bags...do you have as many bags of STUFF as I do?...NOTHING, NADA, empty...geez! I KNOW I saw them recently. When was that?....oh, they're in this room...somewhere, I KNOW IT! On to the closet, looking through more containers and bags...found the wire snips I had been looking for last week(that I NEVER found last week, obviously) but NO NEEDLES.

All the places in the craft room bedroom left me empty handed. The master closet, maybe I saw them in the organizer on the shelf in the master closet.

This is what was running above my eyeballs as I began putting back ALL THE CRAP AS MY HUBBY CALLS IT each container that's supposed to HELP me keep things organized.

Out the bedroom I walked, down the hall and into the closet rustling through the organizer, still convinced the green steel needles would happily greet me...NOT! Ugh...nowhere in here either.

"How many times do I have to go through this circus of wasting time KNOWING I KNOW WHERE TO FIND SOMETHING?

So many times I have looked and looked to no avail...then, I REMEMBER there is ONE who KNOWS where it ALL is.

ONE who can take me right to it. So, like a little child being taught a lesson, ONE MORE TIME...I stopped and had a talk with Jesus.

"Lord, You know EVERYTHING...You even know where my Granny's needles are. Would you take this over and do this for me? You told me to seek You and I would find...and You've done it so many times for me in the past. I just keep FORGETTING to ask You FIRST."

I literally turned on my heels after uttering this prayer OUTLOUD...and a flash went behind my eyes like a quick bolt of lightning...

"They're in the plastic travel container in the basement, you used them on your last Emmaus weekend."

I began to laugh, really...and talk to myself about how He's getting quicker and quicker with answering this prayer for me.

While I was talking to myself about being amazed over His specificity in guiding us, I ran down the stairs, through the door to the basement, around the corner, reached right into the travel container and pulled out GRANNY's needles...right where He said they would be.

"God, You are SO steadfast and true...You were standing right
there with me, probably wondering how long it was going to take me this time to
ask you AGAIN. Thank you for AGAIN coming to my rescue, in this oh-so-important event brief moment of frustration, once again
turned to a PRAISE EVENT."

Amen & Amen

Whatever YOUR NEED today...Talk to God about it FIRST, He'll answer.

"LICHEN" 'EM, MORE AND MORE

Within the last week the word 'mushroom' has come out of my mouth much more than EVER expected...with all this deluge of rain, the little LICHENS are popping up with a vengeance.

My first uttering of this word was while we were playing golf last week...on almost every hole, along the fairways and even up on the greens, there were many of these botanical sprouts...coming up.

My second uttering came while walking down the sidewalk to the neighborhood gym at BS&K's...tall, short, skinny, fat, HUGE, tiny...greeting us each day ...shriveling toward the pine straw-laden ground for their eternal rest. Their existence is so limited...gone as quickly as they come. I'm rather scared of these little/big delectables due to this happening:

My first-ever, personally-purchased yorkie-poo was Nicholas (I called him Nikki)...he was an adorable little black-curly puff of a puppy...2 pounds wet.

I had bought him with my first paycheck after graduating college...and he spent days with "grandma" Mom while I worked. (She was always going outside to enter our basement to work on her 'sewing projects' and it was common for him to run and jump through the grass while walking with her.) Unfortunately, about two weeks after I got him, he took a curious side trip en route and chewed on a mushroom...

He was so tiny and the obviously poisonous one went straight to his nervous system and he didn't make it. (The vet said it was just too much for his little system.)

Sorry I got sidetracked...but you can now understand why I veer away from mushrooms in the wild but love to eat them in my food. Continuing on:

With all the sightings during our season of sogginess in Atlanta, I wondered how to tell the difference in these little unknown fungi...Armillaria_mellea

There's a MUSHROOM CLUB OF GEORGIA...they have a written purpose and everything...

...an educational organization...to promote enjoyment*, study, and exchange of information about wild mushrooms. (I personally have never thought about 'enjoying a wild mushroom' especially after my incident.

This is SERIOUS STUFF, ya'll...their calendar has field trips with speakers even.

One presentation on their site noted one titled "Medicinal, Poisonous, and Hallucinogenic Properties of Fungi". (hhhhmmmmmm)

Then, there was ... interpretive mushroom farms and myco-gardening demonstration areas (and there's a national "MYCO" group even, who knew? ...I bet they're "myco-gardening experts...banner10

As I read along I felt like someone from BIG BANG was going to pop up on my screen and ask me for a password or something. big_bang_theory_cast

This is BIG BRAIN stuff, ya'll...even GA TECH had a USDA grant --to study effects of mushroom mycelium (high-oil content algae for production of bio-fuels)? (GREEN TO THE CORE...that's a mouthful, isn't it?!)

While stumbling around on the site, I found out:

Shiitake mushrooms are the third most popular mushroom species in the U.S."

health benefits: Low in calories, glucose and sodium

high in potassium, phosphorus, copper, and zinc

help lower blood cholesterol

improve the immune system

I can't end this post on such a HIGH-BROW note, so I'll share a mushroom joke...get ready, this will REALLY get you rolling (and I claim no liability to those who may 'split a side' from this one):

Did you hear what the mushroom told the dead tree?

A lichen had developed between us. :p

What 'shroom stories' can share with us today?

MY "FRIDAY FIVE"

Quilly had this Five Word Meme on her blog and invited others to play; she sent me five words.

1.) Coffee ... I drink it most often with ice (now that I'm enduring hot flashes, excuse me, many personal tropical vacations each hour...a tall, iced coffee is hard to beat...oOnly one cup a day though.

2.) Rain...(click the pic for a BIGGER VIEW)...we've prayed for it so long. Now we have more of it than our land can takeFlood90b

...the disaster throughout Atlanta is definitely a site I've never seen in person. Hubby worked the Missouri floods several years ago as a disaster specialist with the American Red Cross and he brought home pictures that looked like these, but I never imagined it would every happen here. Thanks for any prayers you can send our way, and or any money you can send to the Red Cross to help with this tragedy.flood09d

3.) Closet: I need to clean several of these out sometime soon...I don't need to 'come out' of one...and I've never been locked in one, thank goodness!

4.) Furniture: When I think of furniture, I think of all the 'stuff' I have that I can't stand came with hubs when I married him 20 years ago. We don't like the same kinds of furniture taste, except a couple of antiques he had from his grandmother. This has made decorating a pain in the patooty next to impossible. I could throw out EVERTHING in my bedroom and never give it another thought.

5.) Handwriting: My handwriting was ruined once I went through four years of shorthand in high school and college...I can write 110 words a minutes in shorthand but now my script handwriting has no consistency. I often look at others' handwriting and wish it was mine. The good thing: I can take down every word of a sermon or speech and then greatly ponder what was said...it comes in handy for Christmas lists, too!

Blessings,

Skoots1mom

RANDOM DOZEN #3 (for them...it's my first)

1. middle school memory: I won the TALENT SHOW...twirling to "DIZZY"...that was fun...I still have my ribbon.

2. favorite Beatles song: "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND"...classic

3. comfortable outfit:   black/white polka dot sleeveless blouse, black shorts...I'm in for comfort and cool these days...even in the 60-degree rooms of our church, I prefer this cool number

4. Host a party or be a guest:  I like hosting...it forces me to get things done around here.

5. Traditional books or digital ones:  I like things that don't require batteries, so traditional is for me.

6. Learn best by reading, listening or experiencing:  experiencing is my preferred way to learn...thank goodness for 'college-bound chemistry' with hands-on labs...that was the only way I EVER understood algebra...until then, I didn't care what X was and didn't know why anyone else would care about X.

7. When I considered a potential match for marriage, the kiss of death was:  Smoking put a nail in any relationships...not gonna have it in MY house, for sure.

8. Snacks. Salty or sweet?  /gotta do both of these together...don't enjoy one without the other

9. Four-foot radius:  There sits a container of Pearberry scented body butter on the edge of my chair-side table...for those rough elbows and ankles, you know, my natural oils aren't keeping up anymore.

10. Favorite Tom Cruise movie? TOP GUN...oh my!!  I was dating a 'fighter pilot' when this came out and I'll never forget hearing his play-by-play during this movie...good times!

11. Bottle of shampoo bought, don't like what it does to my hair...What will I do:  put it in my daughter's bathroom shower...we don't have the same hair texture, so what won't work for me will probably work for her.

12. Favorite Fall comfort food:  Cornbread dressing covered in giblet gravy

20 YEARS...REALLY?

We’re about two weeks out from celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and I’m finding myself in a very nostalgic mood. A mood not necessarily thinking about my husband, but thinking about the OTHER man in my life at that time, my Daddy.

You see, my Daddy certainly deserved having his name capitalized…even though I know in the proper form that is not correct. He was capitalized in my heart…my strong source…the source of teaching me about honesty in all things. He was a short little man who stood around 5’ 7” with the brightest blue eyes and sparkling silver hair (which he had been given earlier than most…he started graying before I was born).

His Daddy had passed along hard-work ethics to him, so his years of diligent work for Southern Bell as an outside plant man carried on his Daddy’s legacy. He retired after 30 years of dedication and union membership…he believed in making things right, staying aware of fairness and putting in a very hard day’s work…and he passed that to me. He never cut corners or tried to cheat ANYONE out of anything…ever!

Daddy died in 1990, six months after our wedding, and my last picture with him individually was just before we walked down the aisle together. I can still smell his ‘Skin Bracer’ by Mennen’s aftershave…200you know, the green concoction in the kind of square glass bottle…I broke it one time, I know it was glass. Guess they still sell it in the same bottles.

Daddy NEVER left home without a handkerchief and CHAPSTICK in his pocket and he LOVED sports jokes and good sports casters. He always laughed at Dizzy Dean and Milo Hamilton. We enjoyed many years of Atlanta Braves baseball together, even before they went on their winning spree…We were at the old Atlanta Stadium the Sunday Hank Aaron hit his “715” homerun…and as Milo broadcasted: "He's sitting on 714. Here's the pitch by (Al) Downing ... swinging ... There's a drive into left-center field. That ball is gonna be ... outta here! It's gone! It's 715! There's a new home run champion of all time! And it's Henry Aaron!"

180px-AtlantafultoncountystadiumWe were sitting out in left field…sure would have liked to have gotten THAT ball!

Daddy never saw the Braves win the World Series in 1995 though …I know he was chopping with us in 1991 as we were cheering them on (DD was in my belly and I always felt Daddy was watching over my shoulder from Heaven each time I ‘chopped’.

Daddy, I loved you while you were here and I continue to love you …as you help me raise dd through these high school years, even if it is from my heart, in my head, and sometimes in my dreams.

Maybe I’m missing you so much now because I’m readying myself for ‘missing’ DD after ‘life changes forever’ and she heads for college. It will never be the same and I'm praying already she’ll remember her family as lovingly as I do and have the promise in her heart that Jesus will never leave her or forsake her, just like her Daddy!

Thank you, Jesus, for blessing my life with my Daddy.

Isaiah 54:13 "All your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be your children's peace."

IT WAS JUST 18 LITTLE HOLES...

Good causes sometimes cause me to step outside my comfort zones. WHAT ABOUT YOU?

My "comfortable zones", especially the zones involving 'sporting activities', have been rather limited for quite some time now. (For a short while I was a gymnast in high school...it was a love of my life until the fateful day I endured a neck slam and ended my acrobatic endeavors.)

I was also a drum major my junior and senior years of high school, which required a lot of physical agility...I even got to use some of my gymnastics moves in my "salutes" at the beginning of each half time show and in parades; however, I always felt a 'hole' where sports were concerned.

After 'Chuckles' and I married I wanted to 'enjoy sporting' with him, so I bought some used golf clubs even though I had never taken a lesson in my life. I had followed golf with my Daddy and understand the lingo and how to keep score. Once I had my clubs and could practice at the ranges, I found myself hacking away on some par 3 courses. (Even dd got in on it as she got older...her softball swing quickly adjusted to the golf ball and her drives often flew past my ball out around the 125-yard marker...and down the straight aways. Usually my ball was rather lonely on the periphery of the rough grass on either side of the fairway or in the woods, or in a pond...rarely dropping in the middle of the fairway.)

My shots were the most-lacking of our threesome each time we played, but I thoroughly enjoyed the sounds of the clubs slicing through the air and pinging that small, little ball. I also enjoyed all the sights on the course itself...the trees, birds, beautifully-trimmed greens and large ponds with the pine trees and tall oaks along the paths gave me more than the round of golf. All the courses around here are so pretty, I just loved being on them.

Well.....tomorrow...I have signed up for a tournament...ha ha! (That sounds so official...doesn't it?!)

I'll be joining a wonderful three-some of ladies for a round of golf, some putting competitions, and some raffles...the proceeds all going to help support someone here in our community who greatly needs our help.

Pray for this tournament to be a success and that we get our round in...it is raining now, we are expecting a 60-75% chance of rain throughout the night, and about a 40% chance at tee time. (it has been raining here for the last week...so, we'll be 'sinking' as we dig our golf cleats in to hit our drives. Soggy footies don't sound so enticing to me, so "Pray hard, you guys, I don't want wet feet!"
It will be worth it for this cause. It will be worth it for the cause...It will be worth it for the cause.

I'll try to get some pictures of whatever we end up doing, where ever we end up hitting our little balls...yes, I'll be aiming at those 18 little holes and hopefully I can at least get a few 'closest to the pin' shots.

It should be fun no matter where my ball lands, I'll have great team members to share this day with in the rain
:)

HAPPY FRIDAY, EVERYBODY!
**9/18 UPDATE**
Your prayers were heard...IT DID NOT RAIN ON US...AT ALL!  IT had rained before we got there, but I never felt a single drop even though the clouds were looming in the low 70's temperatures.  We successfully shot 11 holes and were exhausted as we sat eating lunch (BLIMPIE graciously had provided sub sandwiches for us!).
There is hope after about four years without having played golf.  I'm ecstatic to say, I got my FIRST-EVER BIRDIE...(which means, on a hole that should take four shots to get the ball into the hole, I successfully got it in on three shots, WOO HOO!!!)...I got a high five and DID THE HAPPY DANCE :) (I have to write this down so I won't forget it:  a long drive, about 130 yards; then a short drive with a #5 iron, and then about a 40-foot putt!)
We played a best-shot scramble and it was lots of fun...I was really excited to hit three or four really long drives that went at least 140 yards and the sounds of the ball coming off the club were awesomely pleasing to my ears.  This certainly makes me want to keep my clubs out and enjoy a few rounds as the wonderful FALL weather is heading our way...(after my blisters heal, that is, not having worn my golf shoes in so long caused my tootsies three heel blisters...I ended the last two holes wearing my daughter's Georgia Bulldog flip flops....(...please don't leave me a correction...I know the X-generations calls them thongs but I can't bring myself to address them as something reminding me of other 'unsightly undergarments'...so, I whole heartedly claim my old-fogey status and will continue to say 'flip flops').
Anybody want to play?

I GET IT, BUT HAVE TO THROW IT BACK...

The marketing world THRIVES on voluminous change, every year, month, day and sometimes down to the minute...what's new, what's the latest 'gossip'...and sports doesn't fall far behind.

Sports being so 'fan' driven and 'sponsor' driven puts much light on things that sometimes should have NO light.

In regards to being a big sports fan, I am one, kinda. Kinda like I am a music fan, crossing many of the the lines and know a little about A LOT:

like me some college SEC football,

like me some professional baseball (even keeps stats on pre-printed scorer's cards for FUN)

like me some pro tennis (until someone
puts their foot in their mouth and makes the game a momentary embarrassment)

like me LOTS of music types (classical to country, back across
contemporary christian and all the way to bluegrass)...but I surely cringe at
outbursts by 'cool' types...the music varieties intrigue me, I listen to lots of them.

Thank you, Jesus, for giving me a 'like' for MANY things...

but only a LOVE for Your Word, Your presence,

the family You've given me

and a loving Christian family to corporately worship with as I walk this life.

I must limit myself though...being intentional to step away because I could find myself getting too deeply entrenched in any of the "seasons", "celebrities" or gossip.

When it gets crazy or ugly, shouldn't I TURN "it" OFF? Maybe I'll crochet.

WHAT do you do when your sports shows, movies or TV become offensive or derogatory?

What does Christ call us TO DO?

Blessings,

and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

AMOS...Have You Been There Recently?

Our Disciple class this week is reading and exhorting the Book of Amos, now if you've read this book in the Bible, you know this prophet doesn't hold back when it comes to sharing what God told him. Many allusions voiced, screamed, foretold to the people of his day yet somehow I feel Amos is here with us.

What do you think?

Amos

3:2
"Out of all the families on earth, I picked you. Therefore, because of your special calling, I'm holding you responsible for all your sins."
5:6
"So seek God and live! You don't want to end up with nothing to show for your life But a pile of ashes, a house burned to the ground. For God will send just such a fire, and the firefighters will show up too late. Raw Truth Is Never Popular."

5:14
Seek good and not evil - and live! You talk about God, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, being your best friend. Well, live like it, and maybe it will happen.

9:8
But you can be sure that I, God, the Master, have my eye on the Kingdom of Sin. I'm going to wipe it off the face of the earth. Still, I won't totally destroy the family of Jacob." God's Decree.

Visiting "Vandy"...oh, so sweet!

Side NOTE: Just spreading the love…along with BS&K...go over to Kim’s blog Just a Southern Girl she is having a giveaway to celebrate her 2nd blogoversary, her 500th post and 25,000 visitor. WE LOVE her blog --you will too...go over and check her out!!!

Joining Sarah for Project 365...even though mine's not relative to the entire week...it's an event I don't want to forget :)

We've already been to:
  • UNC(maybe)
  • Duke(absolutely not, they like themselves ALOT)
  • Wake Forest(liked it)
  • Elon(no, go, too small)
  • University of Alabama(loved it, long drive)
  • Vanderbilt University (AWESOME PreVU!)
  • ...our last will be UGA (woof!)...

As Sassy Granny reminded me today, getting ready for college brings on many "woes" blending into my "goes" for dd heading to college.

I hurt knowing it will never be the same...but, God gives me wonderful hopes and visions of where He'll take her.

My Granny reminds me from Heaven, Jesus NEVER leaves us as long as we don't turn our backs on Him.

So, from now until we reach graduation next Spring...I'll follow the example of my praying Granny who prayed for me after high school...I'll be persistently praying for her to recognize Jesus on her shoulder and in her heart while she's learning her way through college and the rest of her life.

Click on the video below...(then click on the bottom right corner that says GoogleView and choose ORIGINAL SIZE) for best view

Go to Sarah's and join in with us...

ERIN PRAYERS...

Recently my blogging words have been very hard to come by...I'm going through a "desert time".

My 'wanting to write' seems to have fallen off the edge of the earth, don't know why. I've been bouncing around reading posts and leaving some messages hoping some fires start again, but so far it's a big, fat NOTHING. Enough of my moaning...I need your help in ANOTHER ARENA...one much more URGENT.

Please be in prayer for my dear, young friend, Erin, who is STRUGGLING and HURTING through the process of growing new bone marrow while fighting off Leukemia

.
She's had an absolutely horrible week with all the complications of losing her white blood cells. (Thankfully these are known side effects of the treatment, but unfortunately there is NO way around them and she is in the midst of suffering).

So, in her weakness WE AS A BODY OF BELIEVERS can hold her up during this valley of her treatment. We must hold her UP, like Aaron helped hold up Moses' arms in battle.

Dear Prayer Warriors, Erin did not sleep last night...she couldn't get comfortable...she's really having a hard time with an inflammed liver....pray hard for relief!! God has brought her through so much already...He can get her through this too. "...she hurts nonstop. Only the Great Physician knows what to do here...we need Him to nudge the Drs.

Thanks for keeping her in your prayers as she takes baby steps toward her renewed body.

Jer. 33:3 "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know." Blessings,
