AMOS...Have You Been There Recently?

Our Disciple class this week is reading and exhorting the Book of Amos, now if you've read this book in the Bible, you know this prophet doesn't hold back when it comes to sharing what God told him. Many allusions voiced, screamed, foretold to the people of his day yet somehow I feel Amos is here with us.

What do you think?

Amos

3:2
"Out of all the families on earth, I picked you. Therefore, because of your special calling, I'm holding you responsible for all your sins."
5:6
"So seek God and live! You don't want to end up with nothing to show for your life But a pile of ashes, a house burned to the ground. For God will send just such a fire, and the firefighters will show up too late. Raw Truth Is Never Popular."

5:14
Seek good and not evil - and live! You talk about God, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, being your best friend. Well, live like it, and maybe it will happen.

9:8
But you can be sure that I, God, the Master, have my eye on the Kingdom of Sin. I'm going to wipe it off the face of the earth. Still, I won't totally destroy the family of Jacob." God's Decree.

I'm actually a strange one who likes reading the prophets. Tough stuff, though.

GOD will hold us accountable for our sin, but will never fully destroy the remnant of Jacob.

Oh yes! I love Amos. It's a tough read, but an encouraging one in many ways, especially when I consider how desperately we need the Lord.

One passage that has gripped me is this one, 8:11 "'The days are coming,' declares the Sovereign LORD, 'when I will send a famine through the land — not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD'."

It gives me goosebumps.

Blessings,
Kathleen

My favorite Bible class in college was Minor Prophets :-) We had a wonderful teacher with a droll sense of humor. I can still hear his voice when he talked about the "cows of Bashan" (referring to the overfed, pampered women of that city). Sounds like you're enjoying your class!

I love all the old Testament prophets. Just to be inspired by God to preach His word and then stand back and watch all His power would be amazing.

Sobering words. I was just thinking about Jeremiah 29:12-13

Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
